A town split between the river and the ridge
Weehawken covers 1.47 square miles at the southern end of the Palisades, and most of it sits on top of the cliffs. The Lincoln Tunnel Helix curls through the middle, Boulevard East runs along the edge, and the Hudson waterfront below holds apartment and townhouse developments.
Our 24/7 dispatch line covers all of it. The first thing we ask is whether you live in a house on the ridge or in a managed waterfront building, because the two call for different first steps.
Weehawken at a glance for plumbing
Four local facts that change how a plumbing call is handled here.
Waterfront buildings versus older houses
The condos and townhouses near Port Imperial and along Boulevard East are run by associations and management companies. The older houses in Highwood Park and Clifton Park, many of them early 20th-century homes, are usually owned and repaired one household at a time.
| Home type | Who controls the shutoff | Likely trouble |
|---|---|---|
| Waterfront condo or apartment | Building staff or the association holds the riser valves | Leak from the unit above, water heater closet drip |
| Waterfront townhouse | Often a unit valve plus a building main | Slow drain, fixture leak under a vanity |
| Early 20th-century house | The owner, at the meter or basement entry | Aging supply joints, tank water heater failure |
| Two-family on the ridge | Owner, shared between floors | Hot water lost in one unit, basement drain slow |
In a managed building, ask the front desk whether staff must approve a shutoff before any plumber starts. In an older house, the shutoff is yours to find, which is why leak detection often starts with the owner walking the basement and listening for hissing.
Water heaters in condos and old basements
A waterfront condo often has a tank tucked into a hall closet, where a small drip can run for a while before it stains anything. Older houses usually keep the heater in the basement, where a rusting base and a wet pan are the signs to watch.
Our water heater repair page covers what can be fixed on a visit, and water heater replacement explains when a swap makes more sense than another repair. Either way, close the cold supply valve on top of the tank if you see water and cannot stop the flow.
First moves while you wait
These steps fit both a ridge house and a waterfront tower.
- Close the nearest valveA house has a main near the meter. A condo may have a unit valve under a sink or on the heater, so check there.
- Call management if you rent or own in a buildingStaff may have to authorize entry, open a riser closet or warn the unit below.
- Dry what you canPull towels over wet floors and lift anything electrical off the ground, but stay out of standing water near outlets.
- Prepare the accessClear the path to the heater, panel or vanity, and have the unit number or floor ready for dispatch.
Sewer, rain and the Authority
Weehawken drains into the same North Hudson Sewerage Authority system that serves West New York, Union City and Hoboken. Because the sewers are combined, a hard rain can slow public lines, and a basement drain that gurgles in a storm may point to the street rather than to your pipes.
If the backup happens only in heavy rain, report it to the Authority as well as calling us. A plumber can clear your own line with drain cleaning, but cannot fix the public main.
Leak, cold shower or slow drain in Weehawken?
Call any hour and say if it is a house or a managed building. Dispatch books the next open plumber.
Landmarks that help us find you
Hamilton Park on Boulevard East, where a boulder marks the 1804 Burr-Hamilton duel, and the Port Imperial ferry terminal are easy reference points over the phone. The 1883 Hackensack Water Company water tower and Reservoir Park serve the same purpose on the ridge.
Citing the closest one and your cross street gets the plumber to the right door faster than a street name alone.
Next door on the Hudson
Weehawken borders West New York to the north, so see our West New York page if your building sits on that side. For homes just south toward the Hoboken line, Hoboken has its own page.

Weehawken plumbing questions
Yes. The dispatch line answers 24 hours a day, every day, and we book same-day appointments when a plumber is free. Call (551) 249-3045 and say whether the building has staff.
Yes. Weehawken uses 07086 and 07087, and 07087 is shared with Union City. We dispatch to every address in both, from the Boulevard East waterfront to the Highwood Park and Clifton Park streets on the ridge.
Ask management what is covered. Association lines and valves are theirs, but a leak inside your unit that management will not fix is usually yours, and we can help with that part.
We can clear your own drain line, but the public combined sewer belongs to the Authority. If the backup returns after we clear your line, report it to them.
Still have a question? A dispatcher answers around the clock.
